FAQs

Our team is often asked about life at our care home in Seaton, from how daily activities are structured to how our rooms cater to residents’ needs, as well as guidance on making important financial decisions. We’ve answered many of these questions before and are always happy to do so.

To make things much easier, we’ve actually compiled a list of the common queries below, along with detailed responses. We encourage you to explore them first, and if you have any additional questions, we’d be more than happy to discuss them with you directly.

Care Questions

Residential care offers 24-hour support with daily tasks like personal care and mobility for those who don’t need ongoing medical attention. Nursing care, on the other hand, also provides round-the-clock support but includes the expertise of a registered nurse available at all times to manage medical needs. The main difference is the level of medical care provided, with nursing care offering that extra layer of medical expertise.

We’re here to make life as easy and enjoyable as possible for our residents. That means providing the care and support they need with things like mobility, personal care, and medical needs, so they don’t have to worry. But well-being is about more than just care – we also offer plenty of ways to stay active, social, and engaged. Whether it’s joining in on activities, picking up a new hobby, or just spending time with others, we make sure there’s always something to look forward to.

Every care plan is tailored to the individual and regularly reviewed to ensure it continues to meet their needs. We recognise that health and well-being requirements can change over time, so our approach is very flexible and adaptable. We work closely with residents and their families to create personalised care plans, making adjustments as needed to ensure ongoing comfort and support.

We are pleased to offer Respite Care at The Check House Care Home. Before admission, we assess each individual’s care needs to determine the appropriate length of stay. Respite care is ideal for those recovering from an illness, injury, or surgery who need extra support before returning to daily life. It is also a valuable option for full-time caregivers in need of a well-earned break.

We provide Palliative Care at The Check House Care Home for those approaching the end of their life. Our team is dedicated to ensuring comfort, dignity, and compassionate support for both residents and their loved ones during this time.

At the Check House Care Home we require a 28-day notice period for residents receiving any of our long-term care services who wish to move out. Our compassionate team is available around the clock to support you through the transition and answer any questions you may have.

Care during Covid-19 Questions

Following the recent Government recommendations from 15th December 2022, care homes in England can make risk-based decisions about face mask usage. After conducting a thorough risk assessment, we’ve decided to remove the requirement for universal mask-wearing. It is now a personal choice for visitors to wear masks, and residents can request staff to wear masks if they prefer. Our team will always respect and accommodate individual preferences to ensure residents feel comfortable.

Please note that this decision can be reassessed by our Home Manager, company, or local healthcare authorities, and changes may occur in response to any updates in COVID-19 regulations. For more details, feel free to contact our Home Manager directly.

Although COVID-19 vaccinations are no longer mandatory, we strongly encourage all residents, visitors, and staff at The Check House Care Home to remain fully vaccinated, including future booster shots, unless medically exempt. To further reduce the risk of infection, we continue to encourage our team members to stay up to date with their vaccinations.

We follow strict procedures and protocols that align with government guidelines and advice from key health authorities. Our team is fully equipped to manage the ongoing risks of COVID-19, with the Operational Leadership Team ensuring adaptable and responsive leadership. We regularly review and update our procedures, keeping everyone well-informed, including staff, residents, and visitors. Information on preventing the spread of COVID-19, along with clear guidance on what to do if someone becomes infected, is readily available for all.

When a new resident joins, they don’t need to isolate unless they’re showing symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19. In those cases, they’ll need to isolate and take two lateral flow tests: one on day 0 and another on day 2. If both tests are negative, isolation can end.

If a resident tests positive while in the home, they’ll need to isolate for five days and can resume normal activities once they’re no longer experiencing a high temperature or using medication. For those who test positive, we advise avoiding contact with others eligible for COVID-19 treatments for 10 days. Residents unable to take the test should isolate for 5 days.

If there’s an outbreak, we take immediate steps to ensure everyone’s safety. This might include temporarily adjusting visiting arrangements based on current health guidelines and advice. We always follow the recommended procedures to minimise risk and protect our residents. For further details, feel free to reach out to our Home Manager directly.

Facilities Questions

We understand how important pets can be to our residents. Whether pets can be brought into the home depends on any allergies among our other residents. Please contact us to discuss this in more detail and explore how we can accommodate your needs.

Finance Questions

When you pay your weekly care home fees at The Check House Care Home, this covers your accommodation, all meals, snacks, drinks, activities, in-house facilities, and local outings (though some excursions may have additional charges). The fees also include all care and support, though certain medical services like dental care or chiropody may come at an extra cost. While we strive to meet all our residents’ needs, some special requests may result in additional charges. Please contact our team for more details on this.

Care home fees are determined by an individual’s assets and income. This assessment takes into account savings, income, and capital assets such as property and investments. Contributions towards care home fees are based on these factors, and if an individual’s financial situation falls below a certain threshold, they may be eligible for assistance from the Government. This could cover all or part of the care home fees, or at least provide a contribution towards them. For more information, please contact our team.

From the date of death, all fees related to the Care Agreement will be discontinued. Accommodation charges will apply for up to 10 days following the date of death or until the home is cleared of personal belongings.

Fees are reviewed on an annual basis, and any changes will be communicated at least 4 weeks in advance. If you have any questions or need more details, please feel free to contact us.

If you’re facing financial difficulties, we’re here to assist you in any way possible. Whether it’s exploring alternative finance options or moving to a smaller suite within the home, our team can discuss how we can support you during this time.

If your care home fees exceed the amount covered by your local council, someone else, such as a family member, can contribute to cover the difference between the council’s funding and the home’s total fee.

There are actually several ways to pay for care home fees, depending on the individual’s circumstances. If the person has eligible care needs and limited financial resources, the local authority may assist with covering part or all of the fees, based on their financial assessment. For those requiring full-time nursing care, they may be eligible for NHS continuing healthcare funding, which covers the entire cost of care, including accommodation and personal care. If the individual has enough income, savings, or assets, they may need to cover the fees themselves, though family members may sometimes contribute. In some cases, a combination of local authority funding and self-funding can also be used.
