Gentle Companions Bring Joy to The Check House

We recently had the absolute pleasure of welcoming some very special guests to The Check House Care Home in Devon, none other than Harry and George, the charming llama brothers from Peak Hill Llamas! Their visit was a true highlight for residents and staff alike, filling our home with smiles and laughter.
Harry and George were gentle, curious and incredibly affectionate. They wandered through our garden and lounges with their usual grace, happily soaking up all the attention (and cuddles!) from our delighted residents. For many, it was their first time being so close to llamas and the experience was nothing short of magical.
There’s something remarkably soothing about spending time with animals and our llama visitors reminded us just how powerful that connection can be.

The Power of Pet Therapy in Care Homes

Animal-assisted therapy or pet therapy, has long been celebrated for its incredible benefits, especially in care home settings. Interactions with animals can lift moods, reduce feelings of loneliness and even improve physical health. For our residents, time spent with Harry and George offered:

Emotional comfort – Stroking and cuddling the llamas brought back fond memories and provided a sense of companionship and warmth.
Social engagement – The visit sparked conversations, laughter and storytelling among residents, helping to strengthen bonds and create shared memories.
Mental stimulation – Meeting such unique animals encouraged curiosity, questions and learning, keeping minds active and spirits bright.
Stress reduction – Simply being near the llamas brought a calming presence, helping lower anxiety and promote a sense of peace.

A Visit to Remember

At The Check House, we are always looking for ways to enrich the lives of our residents and experiences like these are a perfect example of the joy that thoughtful, engaging activities can bring. Harry and George left a lasting impression and we’re already looking forward to their next visit!
We’d like to thank Peak Hill Llamas for their time, care and the wonderful work they do bringing joy to communities across Devon.
